In 2024, here are 5 tech trends to watch

Let’s be more mindful of AI, even though we’re not opposed to it.

Love it or loathe it, one tech trend we can’t escape from—artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)—will keep making waves in our lives in 2024. But we’re hoping that the folks leading the AI charge will be more careful about how they bring AI into our everyday world.

Take indoor security cameras, for instance. Do we truly need AI for that? It isn’t very certain. But when it comes to our trusty digital assistants like Siri and Google Assistant, that’s where AI could shine and be genuinely useful. Let’s ensure AI is put to good use where it truly counts!

That being said, here are the top 5 tech trends we want to see in 2024.

1. Improved Siri and Google Assistant

Siri and Google Assistant usually do a good job of carrying out commands, but there’s room for improvement in how they handle our questions. By integrating more advanced AI and machine learning into Siri and Google Assistant, we can expect fewer instances of defaulting to responses like “Here’s what I found on the web” or “Sorry, I don’t understand.”

And has anyone else noticed that Siri and Google Assistant can be a bit selective in what they hear, especially on phones? It’s not just me, right? Here’s hoping that Apple and Google work on enhancing their digital assistants, making our daily interactions smoother and more effective.

2. Improved device interoperability

In a surprising move late in 2023, Apple dropped the bombshell that RCS support is on its way to iPhones in 2024. This exciting development means that the days of frustrating group texts and low-quality videos between Android and iPhone users might soon be a thing of the past. Despite my initial skepticism about Apple joining the RCS trend, it seems they’ve decided to wave the white flag.

The benefits of interoperability don’t stop at Android and iPhone harmony. Imagine a world where it’s easier for Android users with MacBooks to seamlessly transfer data between their phones and laptops. While it might sound like wishful thinking, given Apple’s fondness for its walled-garden ecosystem, increased interoperability across a variety of devices would undoubtedly be a welcomed tech trend for 2024.

3. MacOS gaming is better

Lately, Apple has shifted its focus towards enhancing the gaming experience on macOS and iOS. At the Scary Fast MacBook event, Apple unveiled the new M3 chips, equipped with GPUs that support hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. Essentially, this means games can now achieve more realistic visuals, featuring improved reflections, shadows, water simulation, and more.

These features mark significant milestones for Apple’s in-house chipsets powering modern MacBooks, as highlighted by TheOrcTech. Furthermore, at the iPhone event in September, Apple proudly announced that the iPhone 15 Pro models would support native versions of popular games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4.

MacOS gaming in 2024

Looking ahead to 2024, it’s our hope that Apple will continue its efforts to make MacBooks more gaming-friendly. This could not only elevate the gaming experience for users but also spur the development of more games specifically designed for macOS.

4. Thinner AR/VR devices

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses certainly turned heads, garnering more attention than their predecessors, the Ray-Ban Stories. However, some consumers were left wanting as the new iteration lacks mixed-reality capabilities, meaning it doesn’t overlay virtual information onto the real-world environment.

tech trends in 2024

While options like the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 do offer mixed-reality experiences, there’s a desire for something akin to the sleek and slender design of Google Glass, combining style with augmented reality (AR) capabilities. A pair of spectacles with AR prowess, reminiscent of the Google Glass era, would undoubtedly be a cool tech trend to witness in 2024.

5. Killers of Steam Decks

Despite contenders like the Lenovo Legion Go and the Asus ROG Ally vying for the Steam Deck’s crown, the Valve handheld gaming PC maintains its dominance.

Looking ahead to 2024, we’re eager to see these companies raise the bar and compete fiercely to dethrone the Steam Deck.
