HDR calibration without the sliders
The buzz around the HDR10 Plus Gaming standard centers on its game-changing feature – the ability to automatically fine-tune brightness and colors based on your connected monitor or TV, similar to what Sony’s PS5 offers with certain Sony Bravia TVs. In essence, this promises to deliver superior highlight and shadow details and more precise color reproduction. It’s a smart automation of what was once a manual calibration task, involving adjusting sliders until a barely visible logo emerges on a white or black background. Notably, Samsung’s HDR10 Plus Gaming boasts low latency and compatibility with variable refresh rates, promising a smoother gaming experience.
To dive into this technology, you’ll need not only a compatible PC but also an HDR10 Plus Gaming-ready display. Samsung proudly announces that its recent high-end TVs and Odyssey gaming monitors are already on board. Additionally, Nvidia’s previous press release mentioned select Amazon, Panasonic, TCL, and Vizio TVs as being compatible. However, it’s unlikely to achieve the widespread adoption enjoyed by, for instance, Dolby Vision.
HDR10 Plus has been in the picture for a few years now, competing openly and without royalties against the Dolby Vision HDR standard. Both bring significant advantages over the standard HDR10 format, including dynamic metadata for more accurate colors and enhanced highlight and shadow details on compatible screens. Xbox consoles have already embraced Dolby Vision for games, though reviews in 2021, such as HDTVTest’s Vincent Teoh’s assessment, found its benefits over standard HDR10 to be marginal at that time.

While Samsung touts this as a “world’s first” announcement, it’s not the first time they’ve tied specific games to the HDR10 Plus Gaming standard. In late 2021, when they first introduced screens with this format support, they mentioned showcasing titles like Saber Interactive’s Redout 2 and Pinball FX, along with another game named Happy Trails and the Kidnapped Princess, at CES 2022. We’ve reached out to Saber to confirm if their titles eventually supported the standard upon their 2022 releases, but as of now, there’s no evidence that Happy Trails ever hit the market.
