Nearly ten years after its launch, Elder Scrolls Online is still “massively successful”

In 2024, Bethesda and ZeniMax will celebrate the tenth anniversary of Elder Scrolls Online.

The Elder Scrolls 6 might be a while away as Bethesda Games focuses on Starfield. But hold on to your sweet rolls, because the Elder Scrolls Online is turning ten in 2024! Can you believe it’s been that long? To mark this epic occasion, the folks at ZeniMax Online Studios are cooking up a whole year of cool events and new features. They’re taking a moment to look back on the game’s success, and it’s going to be a celebration worth joining!

Launched initially in April 2014, The Elder Scrolls Online has gathered an impressive player base, with over 22 million players enjoying the game over almost a decade. According to studio director Matt Firor, the MMORPG has been consistently successful, and its popularity continues to thrive in 2023. Looking back over the past year, Firor highlights that nearly two million new players joined ESO, excluding those who accessed the game for free on the Epic Games Store.

In honor of The Elder Scrolls Online’s tenth anniversary, a community event is planned for its birthday in April 2024. Additionally, a special ESO Tavern will be welcoming visitors to Germany on July 13-14, 2024. It’s worth noting that while PC players embarked on their Tamriel adventures in 2014, the game’s console launch followed over a year later in June 2015. To encompass the broader anniversary period, Firor explains that they consider April 2024 through July 205 as the ten-year celebration timeframe. Cheers to a decade of Elder Scrolls Online!

Firor adds, “We’re determined to pack it with special events, throwbacks, and a bunch of other exciting things to honor you, our awesome community, and the fantastic ESO development team.” In January 2024, a reveal show is on the horizon, promising to lift the veil on the future of the multiplayer game. This new chapter is set to pick up where the Elder Scrolls Online Necrom expansion of 2023 left off, delving into the mysterious Daedric realms. Brace yourselves for an epic continuation of the story, complete with the intrigue of a cliffhanger that has fans eagerly awaiting what’s next.

Firor also addresses the game’s servers, emphasizing that in 2023, the team’s top priority, alongside delivering the Necrom and Infinite Archive updates, was enhancing the service’s stability. Despite some extended downtimes caused by a hardware refresh, he expresses satisfaction with the current state of affairs. Notably, after the Epic Games Store launch in July, the game experienced its highest monthly active user numbers since 2015.

The Elder Scrolls Online has come a long way, and there’s more excitement ahead. If upcoming content like the Starfield Shattered Space DLC or the adventures in Fallout 76 doesn’t quite grab your attention, and the release of Elder Scrolls 6 still feels distant, perhaps it’s the perfect time to revisit Tamriel in ESO – whether you’re exploring with friends or going on a solo adventure.
